The Train to Machu Picchu
If you are planning on visiting Machu Picchu, then taking the train is a great option if you don’t want to hike. There are several options depending if you’re doing a group tour or a Tailor-made tour of Peru.

Taking the train to Machu Picchu on a Group Tour

What train do you take to get to Machu Picchu?
The majority of the time we use the Expedition Service from PeruRail. The other main operator in Peru is IncaRail who also offer standard and luxury train travel to Machu Picchu. Our Tailor-made team can organise a specific route based on your budget and preferences.

Where do you board the train to Machu Picchu?
On Tucan Travel group tours we board the train in the morning from the charming town of Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley of Peru. There is the option to take the train to Machu Picchu from Cusco which can be organised through our Tailor-made team.

How long does take to Machu Picchu?
Leaving from Ollantaytambo, the train ride to Aguas Calientes, or sometimes known as "Machu Picchu town", is about 1.5 hours.

Is there food served on the train?
On our group tours including the train to Machu Picchu, there is no breakfast served, but there is usually a complimentary coffee and tea and a light snack, and additional snacks and beverages available for purchase.

What’s the train journey to Machu Picchu like?
The ride is very relaxing and gentle, with large panoramic views looking over the valley and mountains. On the way up to Aguas Calientes the best views are out the left side where passengers can get glimpses of the famous Inca Trail Trek and some of the majestic ruins that are scattered along the way. For those who have a really sharp eye they might be lucky enough to spot some Peruvian wildlife such as the Andean Cock of the Rock or Spectacled Bear. The seats have tables (4 people per table) so it's very easy to pass the time reading a book, watching movies on a tablet or playing cards with your fellow travellers.
Is there WiFi on board the train?
No but there are power points on board to charge your devices.

Does the train take you directly to Machu Picchu?
Not too far off! Once arriving in Aguas Calientes we disembark and find the shuttle going up to Machu Picchu.

How much does it cost to get the
train to Machu Picchu?
On our tours, the train ticket to Machu Picchu is included in the price!
